Two men who "shed their clothing and dived into the Savannah River Friday night were the only arrests recorded in the first night of the 2015 St. Patrick’s Day Festival," said a police spokesman.

Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police officers assigned to the River Street Command Center "charged the two men from Pennsylvania in their early 40s with swimming in prohibited waters about 7:15 p.m."

The city ordinance violation is a misdemeanor.

They had "ignored directions to stop from nearby SCMPD Marine Patrol officers who saw them disrobing. The Marine Patrol officers helped them from the waters where they were struggling with an unexpected current and the effects of previous partying."

A "collaboration among the Savannah College of Art and Design, the City of Savannah and the Downtown Neighborhood Association has led to a change that will replace the college’s new larger buses with smaller buses in mostly residential areas of the Historic District," a spokesperson for the City of Savannah said late Friday.

Earlier this year, "SCAD updated its transit operations with newer, larger buses in an effort to increase student transportation and encourage students to rely less on personal vehicles," the City says.

"After concerns were raised by downtown residents about the size of the buses impacting quality of life, the City began actively working with the residents and SCAD officials on a solution."

SCAD announced Friday that effective March 23, "the college will make adjustments to its fleet to replace the large white buses with smaller buses operating within zones where motor coaches are prohibited, encompassing most of the residential areas of the Historic District east of Lincoln Street and south of Liberty Street. Larger buses may be used in these areas during special events."

SCAD will use a mix of small and large buses to run along the two main routes, "further reducing their impact," we're told.

The City is also working with SCAD and the Downtown Neighborhood Association to "establish a Town and Gown Roundtable to enhance communications and feedback in the future."

Gov. Nathan Deal this afternoon signed a bill that allows Savannah’s bars to open this Sunday during the St. Patrick’s Day Festival.

"SB 103 authorizes the governing authority of any city or county in Georgia to allow bars to sell alcohol on one Sunday during each calendar year," says a City spokesperson.

"City Council had previously authorized the City Manager to take action to allow bars to open this Sunday, pending State approval. Gov. Deal called Mayor Edna Jackson personally late this afternoon to inform her that he was signing this bill."

“The Governor wished Savannah a happy St. Patrick’s Day weekend,” Mayor Jackson said. “I want to thank him and the Chatham County Legislative Delegation for allowing bars to profit from this Sunday’s Festival just as restaurants, liquor stores and civic groups will profit.

“Now everyone go have a joyous and safe St. Patrick’s Day.”

Savannah’s Fashion Night has announced their donation of $2,500 to Art Rise Savannah "as a part of their collaboration for the 2014 Savannah’s Fashion Night. The announcement comes after the 2014 event wrapped up its most successful year to date, drawing a record breaking amount of participants for the annual event," a spokesperson for SFO says.

Clinton Edminster, executive director of Art Rise Savannah and coordinator of their event on Fashion’s Night stated, "We can't thank the Savannah Fashion Night Committee enough for this incredible donation and for the opportunity to work with some of Savannah's finest designers, models, and photographers. The collaborative potential this city contains is a force to be reckoned with. The relationships we were able to build during the 2014 event will only be compounded in coming years for even greater impact on the community."

Savannah Fashion’s Night is an annual event that takes place along Broughton Street where the majority of the street is shut down for a pedestrian friendly evening. Each year over 30 retailers participate in the one night event of shopping and entertainment.

“We were thrilled to work with Art Rise for this event” said Co-Founders Bree Thomas and Erin Wessling. “Their commitment and dedication to helping, nurturing and showcasing some of Savannah’s finest artists mirrored our own desire to showcase the amazing talent and businesses we have in the city.”

The donation also comes on the announcement that Savannah’s Fashion Night is postponing plans for the 2015 year in order to solicit outside investors in hopes of creating a larger and more supported event. Plans for further Savannah Fashion Night’s will be announced later in 2015.

Police seek the public’s help in locating “two males who appeared to randomly attack pedestrians in two incidents Sunday" March 8.

In the first incident, two Jersey City, NJ, men were walking at East Congress and Habersham streets about 7:13 p.m. when the car (possibly a Cadillac DeVille) stopped beside them; “the passenger exited and punched a 35-year-old victim several times in the face.” Witnesses confirmed the report.

At 8 p.m., a 21-year-old woman attending college in Savannah reported “she was walking with a male when the car stopped near them and she was punched and knocked down by the passenger,” who is described as a black male, about 6 ft. with a slender to medium body style, short hair and light complexion.

At least two other similar incidents have happened since then.

On the evening of Monday, March 9, police report an attempted armed robbery at 11 West Liberty Street at 10:16 p.m. The report indicates the victim walked to his car and got in. A black male tapped on his window with a gun. The victim pulled out a gun and the suspect fled the scene. The suspect is described as having short dreads, khaki pants and a camouflage print jacket.

On Tuesday  March 10 at 3:19 p.m., police say a victim was walking north on Bull Street near Jones Street when he was reportedly punched from behind and his cell phone was snatched.

The victim said the suspect ran; he chased the suspect to the area of Bull Street near Gordon Street, at which point the suspect entered a vehicle and sped off.

The suspect was described as a black male, slender build, between the age of 20-30 years old. The suspect was observed leaving the scene in a black, 4-door, SUV.
