Late Wednesday night, "while on a work detail in the Visitor Center, inmate James Buchans, a non-violent offender, walked out of the back door and into a pickup truck," a Sheriff's Dept. representative says.

"That truck left the facility grounds and James Buchans was considered an escaped inmate. Upon notification, the Sheriff’s Office new CID Unit, in conjunction with our SORT Unit and US Marshall Service gathered enough information to locate Jennifer Smith, the driver of the truck, and Mr. Buchans," the rep says.

An operation went into effect to regain custody of Mr. Buchans and Jennifer Smith, "who aided in the escape." Units, with additional assistance from CNT, arrested Jennifer Smith and regained custody of Buchans just before 10 a.m. Thursday.

Detectives of Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department are investigating the theft of an automatic teller machine from a bar on the 2400 block of Skidaway Road on Jan. 5.

At about 5:21 a.m. Metro responded to a security alarm activation at the scene. Officers observed that the ATM was missing.

"Investigators believe that just after 5 a.m. two unidentified males arriving in a white Chevrolet cargo van forced their way into the bar, lifting the ATM, then loading it into the van. Both men returned to the building, prying open several game machines and stealing money contained inside," police say.

The suspects drove away from the scene in the van. They are believed to have traveled west on 41st Street.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Violent Crime Task Force and Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department "are investigating a bank robbery that occurred at approximately 3:30 p.m., Jan. 21, at the Ameris Bank in the 400 block of Stephenson Avenue," police say.

"The suspect is described as heavyset black male, at least six feet tall, wearing a gray hoodie and dark sunglasses," police say.

"The suspect entered the bank, displayed a handgun to the bank teller and demanded money. After the teller complied with the suspect’s demands, he fled the scene in a dark sport utility vehicle with no license plate in the direction of Abercorn."

Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department arrested Tramaine Juwuan Prevette, 17, following a traffic stop Jan. 16 near White Bluff Road and Television Circle.

The teen was charged with driving with a suspended license, possession of marijuana, possession of drug related object, theft by receiving stolen property and possession of a firearm by a person under 18.

"Following the traffic stop, Prevette was taken into custody and a search of the vehicle revealed a small amount of marijuana, a digital scale and a handgun. A check of the handgun’s serial number indicated that it was reported stolen Dec. 6, 2015," police say.

Detectives are investigating a shooting on the 200 block of West 39th Street that injured Darris Jones, 24, on Friday around 6:30 p.m..

Metro responded to the scene, finding Jones with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound. Jones was transported by ambulance to Memorial University Medical Center.

"Jones was reportedly exiting his vehicle when several shots were fired by unknown subjects possibly riding in a large SUV or pick-up truck," police say.

"Investigators believe a vehicle similar the suspect’s vehicle collided with another vehicle, fence and street sign while attempting to swiftly flee the area. The vehicle never stopped. It was last seen traveling south on Montgomery Street. No additional injuries were reported," police say.

Downtown traffic will be rerouted for several hours as Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police close streets and intersections for the Martin Luther King Day Parade, scheduled for 10 a.m.

Road closures throughout the staging area begin at 6:30 a.m. The staging area runs from East Broad Street to Price Street and Liberty Street to Gwinnett Street.

The route has changed slightly from past years to accommodate the construction on General McIntosh Boulevard and President Street. The parade route begins at East Broad and Liberty streets. It then moves north on East Broad to Oglethorpe Street, west on Oglethorpe to Price Street, north on Price to Broughton Street, west on Broughton to MLK Boulevard, and south on MLK to Anderson Street to the disband area.

The disband area runs from Gwinnett, May and Anderson streets. Roads along the staging area and parade route will close at 9:45 a.m. and remain closed throughout the parade’s duration.

Traffic will be impacted until approximately 3 p.m. on the day of the event.

Detectives of Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department arrested and charged James Emmanuel Robinson, 23, with murder in connection to the suspicious death of a four-year-old Savannah girl in

Robinson was arrested at a residence on the 2100 block of Gamble Street.

"The child died on Oct. 27. Three days later SCMPD, the Department of Family and Children Services (DFACS) and the Chatham County Coroner’s Office initiated a suspicious death investigation following an autopsy by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation’s Medical Examiner’s Office," police say.

Robinson, who was the live-in boyfriend of the victim’s mother at the time of death, attempted suicide after being questioned by police on Oct. 29, according to reports.

"Siblings of the victim, ages seven, five and three, were removed from their residence by DFACS. Robinson is also being investigated for criminal acts against the victim’s three-year-old sibling," police say.

Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police arrested Richard McGriff, 39, at about 8 p.m., Jan. 12, near the 200 block of West 38th Street following an armed robbery and aggravated battery.

"The male victim was delivering a pizza in the area and asked the suspect if he had placed the order. The suspect replied that he had and asked the victim if he had change for a $50 bill," police report.

"At that time, the suspect aimed a black bag shaped like a handgun at the victim and demanded his money. The victim left the pizzas, fled to the passenger side of an oncoming vehicle, and asked the driver for help," police say.

"As the suspect left the area with the two pizzas, the victim noticed the bag was tied around the suspect’s arm. The victim then chased the subject into a nearby yard where a fight ensued. During the altercation, the suspect attempted to stab the victim in the face. The victim and a bystander held the suspect down until Metro officers arrived on scene," police say.

The suspect was transported to Memorial University Medical Center where he was treated for minor injuries.

SCMPD arrested three suspects after neighbors reported a burglary in progress Jan. 12, in the 200 block of Sandlewood Drive.

Khadijah Fantasia Ashley Allen, 18, was arrested along with two 14-year-old males. Allen and the first minor were charged with party to the commission of a crime (burglary in the 1st degree). The male suspect is also charged with possession of a handgun by a person under the age of 18.

The second male suspect was charged with burglary in the 1st degree.

"Just before 5:30 p.m., observant neighbors reported at least two black males entering the back yard of the Sandlewood Drive residence with a female possibly serving as a lookout near the front of the house. Once on scene, officers were alerted to an alarm activation at a residence on nearby Sandle Cove," police say.

"Responding Metro officers observed two juvenile males fleeing Sandlewood Drive on foot and pursued the juveniles before the arrest. Allen was arrested shortly after," police say.

"Further investigation revealed forced entry at the two residences and a subsequent canvas of the area led to the discovery of property stolen from the houses."

Allen was transported to Chatham County Detention Center without incident. The minors were charged and released to their guardians.

 Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police are investigating a shooting on the 1000 block of Lynah Street that injured Patrick Davis, Jr., 28, about 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.

"Metro officers made contact with Davis on the 1000 block of Googe Street. Davis was transported by ambulance to Memorial University Medical Center with a non-life-threatening wound," police say.

"Davis was reportedly shot during an altercation with an acquaintance. The suspect is described as a black male who may be driving a light colored vehicle."
