Twenty-five dogs and 11 cats and kittens were transferred today from the Savannah-Chatham Animal Control Shelter to the Atlanta Humane Society to facilitate adoptions.
The Atlanta organization also picked up four cats and nine dogs from the Hilton Head Humane Society.
The Atlanta organization "had learned that the census at the Savannah facility was nearing capacity and launched the humanitarian effort to help avoid euthanizing the animals and find homes for them in the Atlanta area," a spokesperson says.
The transfers eliminated about half of the dogs in the shelter, making room for more animals.
The Atlanta Society "will absorb the cost of transferring the animals where new owners are expected to be found. Metro will be reimbursed for the cost of testing and vaccination."
The Atlanta Society has partnered with Metro in the past and officials there heard that the Savannah shelter had a large number of animals.
“This truly was a humane effort by the Atlanta Society and we certainly appreciate their thoughts and efforts,” said Lt. Cary Hill who oversees the Animal Control Unit. “Our partners have helped us save untold numbers of animals.”

Local cyclists will converge on Savannah City Hall at noon Thursday, March 20, "to thank City leaders for helping to make Savannah better for bicycles, and encourage them to do more to make the city safer, friendlier and more convenient for people who ride bikes," says a spokesman for the Savannah Bicycle Campaign.
“Over the last six years we’ve worked cooperatively with the City of Savannah to expand our bicycle infrastructure network, organize cycling events, and earn Bicycle Friendly Community status from the League of American Bicyclists,” said John Bennett, executive director of the Savannah Bicycle Campaign, who also pens Connect Savannah's biweekly "The News Cycle" column.
“The Ride to City Hall is designed to celebrate the progress we’ve made as a community and urge our leaders to do more.”
A group ride organized by the Bicycle Campaign will depart from Ellis Square, arriving at City Hall just after noon. Those who do not have bicycles can rent a CAT Bike from the Ellis Square bike share station, subject to availability. Following remarks, lunch will be served.
This event is being held during the same week as the annual Ride to the Capitol in Atlanta and in conjunction with other rides to city halls in Athens, Griffin, Milledgeville and Rome.

The influential Cook Political Report has moved the race for retiring Sen. Saxby Chambliss's U.S. Senate seat into the "tossup column."
Despite this year's overall grim outlook for Democratic chances in the Senate, the Report says :
These ratings change aren’t all bad for Democrats. The open seat in Georgia moves to the Toss Up column from Lean Republican. Michelle Nunn is proving to be perhaps the best Democratic challenger of the cycle. Republicans, meanwhile, are mired in a crowded primary that seems destined to produce a run off. As a result, Republicans won’t have a nominee until late July. Moreover, this may be the one race where the threat of nominating a candidate who is generally unelectable in a statewide general election is very real.
Longtime Savannah Congressman Jack Kingston is giving up his House of Representatives seat in order to run for the Senate seat, in a crowded field of Republicans.
