Metro Traffic officers are investigating the collision of a minivan and a motor scooter that seriously injured two women Friday night.

Latroya Williams, 21, driver of the scooter, and Altovise Christina Thomas, 22, were transported to Memorial University Medical Center with injuries considered non-life threatening.

"They were on the scooter riding northbound atop a railroad overpass on Ogeechee Road at 10:27 p.m. when they were struck from behind by a Chrysler Town & Country minivan that changed lanes behind them," police say. "The van was driven by a 36-year-old Hinesville man."

An off-duty officer en route to his tour of duty "foiled a burglary this morning when he responded to 911 calls and found a suspect in a business," police say.

The West Chatham Precinct sergeant responding to a citizen’s call found a pickup truck partially in the roadway and a shattered front door to O’Reilly Auto Parts on the 4100 block of Ogeechee Road at 6:10 a.m.

Hamilton William Smith, 22, of a Brittlewood Court address, was located in the building.

Three suspects were arrested Wednesday "during the service of a search warrant, including a juvenile and a male who injured two police officers and endangered two children in an attempt to drive away," police say.

Michael Antwain Whitaker, 25, was charged with two counts of felony obstruction, two counts of cruelty to children in the first degree, reckless conduct and theft by receiving stolen property. He was taken into custody after he dragged a Metro detective in an attempt to drive away from the scene on Weiner Drive about 9:30 a.m.

Also arrested were the subjects of the search warrant being served by Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police: Darien JaRell Cody, 21, and a juvenile, 16.

Cody was charged with burglary, possession of a drug related object and possession of marijuana. The juvenile was charged with burglary and an outstanding Regional Youth Detention Center warrant.

Crime Suppression Unit officers and detectives from the Southside Precinct were serving the warrant at Cody’s residence for the Feb. 6 burglary of a business on the 300 block of East Montgomery Cross Road.

"Police had detained Cody and the teen when Whitaker was found hiding in a bathroom," police say.

"Police momentarily released him to comfort two young children in his vehicle when he sped away, dragging a detective from the passenger door while two other officers tried stop him. He was taken into custody after an officer deployed a taser. Neither of the officers received serious injuries."

Whitaker has "an extensive record of arrests by Metro Police, including a February 2011 charge of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and a March 2011 probation violation," police say.

Investigations into the burglary and the arrests this morning are continuing.

"Test gunshots will be fired inside buildings at two locations tonight to test expansions of the ShotSpotter system," police say.

The tests will begin at 11 p.m. "Officers of the Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department, Savannah College of Art and Design Security and technicians from ShotSpotter will be on hand. The first test will be in the area of Abercorn and York streets. Then they will take place in the area of Bull and 37th streets," police say.

While the shots will be fired inside the building, "they may be audible to those outside," police say. "There will be no danger to the public."

ShotSpotter is being installed in areas around Savannah in a joint effort by the city and SCAD, according to police. It uses a series of sound sensors to detect gunshots and advise on where they are fired.

Fireworks being discharged in Daffin Park "led to erroneous reports on a Savannah television station that shots had been fired near a private school Tuesday afternoon," police say.

Central Precinct Patrol officers from the Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department responded to a call about potential gunshots across Waters Avenue from Blessed Sacrament School on East 44th Street about 4 p.m. "But a custodian told responding officers that the sounds actually came from the park and he saw smoke from the fireworks," police say.

Some students still as the school were called back to the building until police responded, police say. Those who ignited the fireworks were not identified.
