"At about 4 p.m., officers responded to the area and found one vehicle damaged by the gunfire. Investigators determined the vehicle was occupied at the time the shot was fired, but no injuries have been reported," police say.

The circumstances leading up to the incident are still under investigation.

Actor Shia LaBeouf has apologized for what he calls a "disrespectful" rant against Savannah law enforcement officers during his arrest here last week on public drunkenness and disorderly behavior charges. The rant included odd racial references, including references to interracial porn.

Speaking to an African American Sheriff's Deputy while being booked at the Chatham County Detention Center, LaBeouf says "that's savage as f***, man."

When the deputy asks why, LaBeouf replies, "'Cause you're a black man."

When LaBeouf says the police are racist, a deputy calmly replies, "How are we being racist?"

LaBeouf says, "'Cause you got me in here on a f***in' hole from a black man who arrested me for being white in a city that don't have nothing to do with none of it. I was sitting there having a cigarette, asking three black people to have a cigarette, motherf***er wants to call me a f***in' racist."

While being arrested downtown earlier, LaBeouf was also abusive toward officers.

"I'm a f***in' American, I pay my taxes, so get this sh** off my f***in' arms," he says while handcuffed in the police car.

"You got a president who don't give a f*** about you. You got a police department who don't give a f*** about you. So you want to arrest white people who give a f***? For a cigarette? I came up to you trying to be nice, you stupid bitch... I got more millionaire lawyers than you know what to do with, you stupid bitch."

In a statement after the incident, LaBeouf wrote, "I am deeply ashamed of my behavior and make no excuses for it... My outright disrespect for authority is problematic to say the least, and completely destructive to say the worst.... It is a new low. A low I hope is a bottom... I have been struggling with addiction publicly for too long, and I am actively taking steps toward securing my sobriety and hope I can be forgiven for my mistakes."

Sources say LaBeouf is back on the set of the movie he is filming here.

Savannah-Chatham Police Chief Joseph Lumpkin announced today that the suspect in custody for last night's tragic shooting/collision in the City Market is 17-year-old Jerry Chambers, who is no stranger to local law enforcement.

Chief Lumpkin says the incident last night was gang-related.

In June 2016, Chambers, who was then 16, turned himself in to police after being suspected of a robbery and shooting in Savannah Mall’s parking lot that left Marie Cochran, 63, with serious injuries.

At the time Chambers faced charges of armed robbery and aggravated assault. He was however released.

In the incident last night, Chambers allegedly shot into a crowd of people in City Market from a white SUV, injuring three. The vehicle was pursued by police, hitting four pedestrians and killing one before coming to a stop.

The pedestrian killed was Scott Waldrup, a manager at the downtown restaurant The Grey.

Two others in the SUV with Chambers died in the one-vehicle collision, police say.

A second shooting a few minutes later sent one man to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Chief Lumpkin says the victim of that shooting isn't cooperating with police, and police currently don't know if the two shootings are related.

At a little after midnight following a day of Fourth of July festivities, shots fired from a vehicle in the still-crowded City Market area injured at least three people.

A subsequent shooting injured another person.

Two people in the vehicle later died in a crash of the vehicle on Bay Street at Barnard, after police immediately began pursuing it.

One pedestrian was killed in the crash, and five other pedestrians sustained non-life threatening injuries, police reported this morning.

"Officers heard gunshots at 12:13 a.m. at intersection of Jefferson St. and W. St. Julian St. Two subjects sustained non-life threatening injuries, and one suspect is in critical but stable condition," a police spokesperson said at an 11 a.m. news conference.

Savannah-Chatham Metro Police say a suspect is in custody and is facing three counts of felony murder for the two deaths in the vehicle and the pedestrian death. The suspect's identity hasn't been released.

Eyewitness reports have the shooter's vehicle as a white SUV which pulled up at Julian and Jefferson Streets in the heart of the tourist/entertainment zone, at the height of the after-fireworks late night party downtown.

Police say there was a second shooting soon after,

"Officers overheard a second shooting at 12:27 a.m. near the intersection of Jefferson and Broughton Streets," said the police spokesperson, with one victim sustaining non-life threatening gunshot injuries and arriving at the hospital in a private vehicle.

Much of the crash scene on Bay Street was still blocked off several hours later, as police continued to examine the scene.

More info is expected at a news conference later this afternoon from Police Chief Joseph Lumpkin, who continues to review evidence from the incidents.

On Friday, June 23, at about 6:25 p.m., the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) responded to the scene of a shooting at the request of the Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department (SCMPD).

The shooting occurred as the SCMPD SWAT and Chatham Narcotics Team were serving a search warrant at 512A W 38th St., Savannah, GA.

"Officers said they did not fire any shots; however, in order to ensure transparency, Chief Joseph Lumpkin called the Georgia Bureau of Investigation to investigate the incident," says a SCMPD spokesperson.

Two people were transported to a hospital for gunshot-related injuries. One of them died at a hospital. The other has non life-threatening injures.

"During the incident, Shep Morrell, 72, and James Miller, 46, suffered gunshot wounds. EMS responded for medical treatment and transported Morrell and Miller to Memorial University Medical Center. Morrell died from his wounds and Miller’s injury was non-life threatening," a GBI spokesperson says.

Preliminary information from witnesses and officers "revealed that law enforcement deployed distraction devices and non-lethal Pepperball projectiles during the execution of the search warrant. No guns were fired by officers during the incident. All gunfire originated from inside the residence prior to officers making entry, which is consistent with the crime scene examination," the GBI reports.

The GBI is conducting an independent investigation to determine what occurred during the incident. Anyone with information is asked to call the GBI Statesboro office at (912) 871-1121.
