"With heavy hearts the Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department announces the passing of retired Lt. John Cain, who died in the early morning hours of Sunday, Dec. 4," a department spokesperson says.
"For 27 years, Cain faithfully served the Savannah-Chatham County community as a police officer, most recently in the SCMPD’s Southside Precinct. SCMPD honored Cain as its 2015 Supervisor of the Year," police report.
Cain was promoted to lieutenant in November 2016, before officially retiring.
In 2015, Lt. Cain garnered attention across the world when a photograph by Casey Jones showed him helping an injured runner across the finish line during the annual Rock-N-Roll Marathon.
Cain later explained that helping the runner, a cancer survivor, cross the finish line became important to him when the runner expressed that he was completing the race to honor his father, who had recently died of the disease.
One month later, Cain learned that he would begin his own fight against pancreatic cancer. Cain fought hard during his year-long battle with the disease.
“The news of Lt. Cain’s passing is deeply saddening to myself, the SCMPD and the community we serve,” said SCMPD Chief Joseph H. Lumpkin, Sr.
“During this time of bereavement, I hope his loved ones find solace in knowing that in addition to the commitment to the badge shown to us all on television, his service to this community and pride in his profession was continual. It was shown whether or not the cameras were rolling. I’m proud to have served at this agency with a law enforcement professional such as Lt. Cain. He will be missed.”

At approximately 1:15 p.m., Metro responded to the 100 block of Washington Avenue for a reported armed robbery.
"Reportedly, an adult female victim was moving a vehicle in her driveway when at least three suspects approached her and robbed her at gunpoint. The victim was able to seek aid at a nearby residence to call 911," says Darnisha Green of the SCMPD Public Affairs Office.

George K. Gannam
At the Nov. 22 City Council meeting, Mayor Eddie DeLoach proclaimed December 7, 2016 as George K. Gannam Day in Savannah in honor of the sacrifices of Staff Sergeant George Gannam, "all those lost in World War II, as well as Savannah’s World War II Veterans," a City spokesperson says.
December 7 is the 75th anniversary of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor and the loss of Sergeant Gannam in that attack, at age 22. Gannam is recognized as Savannah’s first World War II casualty.
The Benedictine Military School grad enlisted in the US Army Air Corps in 1939. Stationed with the 18th Air Base Group at Wheeler Field in Hawaii, Gannam was killed as he tried to prevent the destruction of aircraft at Hickam Field.
The City of Savannah also announces the availability of the George Karam Gannam papers, an archival collection of artifacts and records documenting George Gannam’s life and military career donated to the City’s Municipal Archives by the Gannam family so they could be accessible to the public.
Highlights of the collection include correspondence from Bishop O’Hara, personal items Sergeant Gamble had with him in Hawaii at the time of his death, and a flag given to the family by Mayor Thomas Gamble on the first anniversary of Pearl Harbor.
Two exhibits featuring the collection are now available for the public to view: a physical exhibit in City Hall’s Council Chamber accessible during City Hall tours, and an online exhibit available at www.savannahga.gov/Gannam.

Work has begun on the replacement of Fort Pulaski’s Entrance Bridge over the South Channel of the Savannah River.
The southbound lane on the existing bridge will be closed for the duration of the bridge construction. Temporary traffic signals will control traffic flow in the northbound lane. Expect some delays while entering the park.
Please use extreme caution while traveling Highway 80 East from Savannah, as vehicles waiting to enter Fort Pulaski National Monument may be temporarily stopped in the passing lane.
Construction should take one year; expected completion is fall/winter of 2017. During the construction process, no fishing will be allowed on or near the bridge at any time. Other areas of Cockspur Island will remain open for fishing as usual.
For bridge construction updates, please refer to the United States Federal Highway Commission at the following website: https://flh.fhwa.dot.gov/projects/ga/pra-fopu/.
