Ghost Forests & Goodies

What is a ghost forest? Ghost forests form when salt water seeps into the groundwater system of coastal forests. Trees are damaged by the salt water, lose their leaves, and ultimately turn white--or “ghostly!” Savannah Tree Foundation is excited to host a family-friendly Halloween hike through the ghost forest of Skidaway Island State Park. We’ll teach our hikers fun tree facts and have treats for them along the way. Costumes are highly encouraged for this socially-distant Halloween fun! Join us on Saturday, October 31st at Skidaway Island State Park! We’ll host three shifts to ensure social distance--sign up for your time slot here! We will meet at the trailhead for the Big Ferry Trail Loop and hike out to the Observation Tower, approximately 1 mile round trip. The event is recommended for ages 3-12. While this event is free, be sure to bring $5 for your park entrance fee to support our state parks! Please note our COVID safety protocols: Face masks will be required. Hand sanitizer and gloves will be provided. Prior to the event, please DO NOT ATTEND if: You or a member of your household has tested positive for COVID-19 in the past 2 weeks, you or a member of your household has had a fever, or you or a member of your household is waiting to receive results of a COVID-19 test.
