Commissioned by the SCAD Museum of Art within the framework of the exhibition "Frederick Douglass: Embers of Freedom," Raphael Barontini's project consists of two parts: a site-specific installation for the museum's iconic Jewel Boxes and a performance in collaboration with a local high school marching band. The installation features large-scale textile works based on archival materials, invoking Douglass' legacy as a radical, revolutionary force in American history and symbolically gesturing toward his escape to freedom to become a major public figure.
