Self Liberation, Taken Not given: Regional Maroon Power!
When: Thu., Oct. 24, 7-8:30 p.m. 2024
Join us for a screening and dialogue on 2 Savannah generated videos featuring crucial SELF-LIBERATION Legacies of regional maroon & Seminole contra-slavery warriors. Billy Bowlegs and Nero led a band of GA & SC Afro-Seminole into a successful Okefenokee Swamp enclave. With nature as their base, they wreaked havoc upon chattel slave empires of FL—areas controlled by many regional Savannah planters.
Afro-Seminole established their rights of eco-cultural sovereignty. Unlike propped-up & approved narratives of Union side Civil War contribution or compliance, this focus appreciates SELF-liberation and SELF-determination well before emancipation given at the whim or convenience of state authority.
