Winter Science Series: Fish Taxonomy

In this class participants will improve their fish identification skills through the application of art and science. Fish taxonomy is a brand of science that involves identifying and classifying organisms. Before photography, illustrations were used to document different types of marine life. Gyotaku, the Japanese art of fish printing, is one type of art form used to document fish. Participants will practice Gyotaku* and will learn how to use a dichotomous key to identify different types of preserved fish species. *Bring a cotton or canvas item to create an art piece on using techniques inspired by the Gyotaku process.
