Savannah Fire & Emergency Services investigators continue their examination of the scene of a fatal early morning house fire in Oakdale Subdivision.
Savannah firefighters were dispatched to 405 Lee Blvd. just before 5:40 a.m. Thursday on a report of a possible structure fire. "When they arrived on scene, the firefighters discovered smoke coming from the second floor windows of the three-story brick house," a department spokesperson says.
"Firefighters forced entry into the house and initiated an attack on the flames while other firefighters assisted a resident down from a second floor balcony. It was then that they were notified of another resident still inside the home."
Firefighters began a systematic search of the second floor of the home and located the victim inside a bedroom at the front of the house. They removed the victim from the home and administered CPR until turning care of the victim over to emergency medical personnel. EMS transported the victim to Memorial University Medical Center where he was pronounced deceased.
The 58-year-old victim was identified by residents of the home as Jerome Abernathy.
"Firefighters continued the battle the flames inside the house and were able to contain the bulk of the fire to the second floor of the home. However there was minor extension of the flames to the third floor and attic areas. The remainder of the house sustained smoke and heat damage," the department says.
A total of ten people, four adults and six children, lived in the home. "All of the residents, with the exception of the victim, were able to flee the home without injury. They are receiving assistance from the American Red Cross."

Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police "safely located a six-month-old boy and a 13-year old female who were missing in a wooded area this morning in Liberty City," a department spokesperson says.
Around 4:30 a.m. officers were dispatched to an armed robbery/carjacking. West Chatham Precinct officers spotted the vehicle. When they attempted to stop the driver, the driver fled, crashing at the intersection of Staley Avenue and Liberty Parkway.
"Officers observed Davontay Jones 19, run into the woods with the baby. Officers found and arrested Jones around 6:00 a.m. Other officers found the infant two hours later, alone, near a fence line, behind a shed," police say.
The female teen was located by a passing motorist just before 10 a.m. Both the infant and teen were transported to the hospital for medical evaluation.
"Investigators have since learned Jones, the infant, and the 13-year-old are siblings. They have further learned that Jones and the 13-year-old were both involved in the robbery," police say.
Detectives believe the 13-year-old female "lured a man to her residence under false pretenses. When the victim arrived, she met him out front with her baby brother and her older brother. The victim gave them a ride. When the victim stopped to let them out, Jones assaulted the victim. Following the altercation, Jones took the victim’s car and fled the scene with his siblings," police say.
Jones and his sister are both in police custody at this time. Jones is charged with robbery by force, cruelty to children and various traffic charges. Jones’ sister is a juvenile and will be charged with robbery by force.

Blowin' Smoke Southern Cantina will be closing for renovations on Monday, July 25, 2016, for approximately two weeks.
The renovations will include the addition of one restroom; replacement of the existing slab to smooth and extend the foundation to allow for more seating space both inside and outside; and relocation of the main bar to the middle of the dining room to allow for more seating.
To celebrate the completion of the space updates and renovations, Blowin’ Smoke will feature new cocktail and beer offerings upon reopening. The exact reopening date will be announced in early August.
“Luckily, the design constraints of the existing restaurant space has never detracted from our customers happy patronage,” said Brian Huskey, owner of Blowin’ Smoke and its sister restaurants under the Gaslight Group’s brand. “However, we believe with some strategic re-design and improved infrastructure, our friends will appreciate the enhanced space to enjoy their favorite Southwestern-inspired dishes, especially with the addition of the new, larger bar area.”
