Art Rise Savannah is excited to announce it’s been awarded a $10,000 Project Grant from the Georgia Council on the Arts (GCA) for programs including the First Friday Art March, Non-Fiction Gallery, and the Savannah Art Informer.

The awarded grant will be used to increase the capacity, awareness, and impact of theses three programs in 2017. This is the second grant Art Rise has received from the GCA.

“I couldn’t be more proud of our team here at Art Rise for securing this funding for the arts here in Savannah,” said Clinton Edminster, Executive Director of Art Rise. “We are incredibly excited to be able to offer increased programming for the community in 2017 and we now have the state arts council to thank for that. We are ramping up on all levels and financial stability is key to creating an organization that is both dynamic in its response and consistent in it’s goals. This grant demonstrates once more that we are headed in the right direction with the right steps.”

The GCA’s Grant Panel commended Art Rise Savannah “for bringing arts experiences to underserved communities and advancing the concept of developing a creative economy” as well as “their resourcefulness and recognition for strong administrative support in order to fulfill the mission.”

Art Rise Savannah continues to grow through corporate sponsorships, individual community support, and grants such as these both at a state and local levels.

Armstrong State University’s latest Coastal Empire Economic Monitor reports that "the Savannah metro economy accelerated during the first quarter of 2016. Solid gains in total employment along with nearly all other economic indicators supported strong regional economic activity," according to a University spokesperson.

The Economic Monitor, which analyzes data and identifies trends affecting the regional economy, tracks key growth areas. "The Coastal Empire coincident economic index increased to 172.5 from 171.8 in the previous quarter, noting an annualized pace of 3.3 percent during the opening quarter of 2016," the University says.

“Consumer expectations in the south Atlantic states will remain positive in the second quarter,” said Michael Toma, Fuller E. Callaway Professor of Economics and the Director of Armstrong’s Center for Regional Analysis. “Economic growth is expected to continue through the second half of 2016 at a pace comparable to first-quarter growth.”

In the housing market, building permit issuance for single-family homes has hovered around 500 new homes per quarter since 2015. The seasonally adjusted number of new residential homes permitted for construction declined 4.4 percent during the first quarter, falling from 509 to 487.

"However, the housing market is only off one percent (six units) from year-ago levels. The average value of a building permit issued for single family homes jumped 23 percent to $251,800 from $205,600, though the bounce is not considered sustainable and is expected to return to typical levels in second quarter data," according to the Monitor.

Additional highlights from the latest Economic Monitor include:

· The Coastal Empire leading economic index increased 1.4 percent, rising to 154.5 from 152.4 in the previous quarter. "The index was primarily lifted by a significant jump in the average value of building permits issued for single-family homes and by diminished new filings for unemployment insurance," the Monitor reports.

· Seasonally adjusted employment in Chatham, Bryan and Effingham County increased 1,300 jobs to average 175,600 for the quarter. Over the course of the year, employment growth was 3.6 percent, marking the seventh consecutive quarter during which employment growth exceeded 3 percent, roughly twice the long-term growth rate since 1990. "Savannah’s growth in the current period is diverse, reaching across many sectors, unlike the immediate pre-recession period that relied mostly on surging construction activity," the Monitor reports.

· Manufacturing added 200 workers while construction firms lost 100 workers.

· Consumer confidence wavered during the first quarter of the year, "but appears to be setting up to be back on track during the second quarter," the Monitor says.

· In the labor market, seasonally adjusted initial claims for unemployment insurance (UI) fell 14 percent from 758 claims to 651 per month. The number of UI claims is now 15 percent below previous year data and is about 100 claims less than expected, given the size of the workforce.

Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police are gearing up for this weekend’s July 4th and First Friday festivities; and ask the public to be mindful of traffic conditions in the Downtown area.

The annual firework display is set to begin at 9:15 p.m., July 4, and will be visible from River Street. Thousands of firework show spectators are expected to attend.

In anticipation of potential road delays, Metro will increase traffic and foot patrols in the Downtown festival area, starting Friday afternoon. Officers also will patrol Hutchinson Island in greater force to assist with traffic flow, prevent bottle-necking and help move motorists safely. To ensure safety and help minimize delays, motorists are asked to be vigilant, patient and co-operative.

Public parking lots on River Street will close on Monday at about 3 a.m. until early Tuesday afternoon. River Street will close to vehicular traffic Monday at 3 p.m. and will reopen early Tuesday morning.

All traffic and parking laws will be enforced on in Downtown Savannah and Hutchinson Island. Vehicles parked in the roadway, or in a manner that obstructs traffic will be towed at the owner’s expense. Please note that parking vehicles on the Truman Parkway and Talmadge Bridge also is dangerous and illegal.

Interstate 16 will be available to drivers leaving the firework show. To leave Downtown, traffic originating from points beyond Bay Street will be directed away from Martin Luther King Boulevard to other routes, such as Whitaker and West Bay streets. Westbound traffic on Bay Street will be directed to East Lathrop Avenue to access I-16 via Louisville Road.

Police recommend use of city parking garages, where drivers will be given maps for the easiest Downtown exit routes following the firework display. Motorists are encouraged to plan ahead, expect delays and heed posted signage. The key components of the traffic plan include:
• Prohibiting traffic from turning southbound onto Whitaker from Bay. Westbound traffic on Bay Street will be directed to alternate routes to I-16 through East Lathrop and Louisville Road, or through Garden City.
• Parking garage traffic will be routed southbound on MLK, Whitaker and Price streets.
• Alternate routes to I-16 are West Gwinnett and 37th streets. Price Street also can be used to get to 37th Street, which will take traffic to westbound I-16.
• Additional signage will be deployed to assist drivers in locating the alternative routes to I-16.
• Traffic may be heavy along Highway 80 for those leaving Tybee Island’s fireworks display. There is a slight potential for shallow coastal flooding due to King Tides July 4. At this time, this flooding is not expected to close Highway 80. Remember if there is shallow coastal flooding: TURN AROUND, DON’T DROWN
• Traffic headed toward Wilmington Island via President Street should flow as usual.

Also please remember that the City of Savannah Curfew Law remains in effect for this event. All persons 16 years of age and under must be off the streets at 11 p.m. unless accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. Officers will be enforcing this City Ordinance.

As always you can stay up to date with the latest on the Festival, road closures and other related updates by following the Twitter Feed @SCMPD, Facebook or the website www.scmpd.org.
